ABC hosts gush over Dwyane Wade’s 12-year-old trans child: ‘She seems wise beyond her 12 years!’

"Good Morning America" co-anchors George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts gushed over former NBA player Dwayne Wade's 12-year-old transgender daughter.

Wade, 38, and his wife, 47-year-old actress Gabrielle Union, made the decision to allow their pre-teen biological son to transition into a female.

During a clip of the interview featuring Wade and his family, Stephanopoulos lauded the former basketball star's parenting skills.

"NBA legend Dwayne Wade here live talking about his daughter Zaya's courage coming out as transgender, and his new documentary," Stephanopoulos said.

According to Newsbusters, the athlete told Roberts that the child was "leader" of the family who "educated" the rest of their family on what it meant to be a transgender child.

"You said that she helped you and the family have a better understanding and helped you with this," Roberts said to Wade in the clip. "How was she able to do that?"

Wade responded, "Well, she's our leader. ... It was a process for us to sit down with our daughter and find out who she is and what she likes and not put something on her, because, as parents, we put our hopes and we put our fears on our kids."

Wade revealed that his daughter knew she was transgender from the tender young age of 3.

Roberts later added, "Wade says he and his wife actress Gabrielle Union didn't have all the answers when Zaya first approached them and became educating themselves to support their daughter. ... She seems wise beyond her 12 years!"

Wade also said he knew that his daughter was different "early on," and said that he had to educate himself and remain open-minded in order to be a successful parent of a transgender child.

"I knew early on that I had to check myself," he admitted. "That's what I knew. I knew early on that I had to ask myself questions. ... I've been a person in a locker room that has been a part of the conversation that has said the wrong phrases and the wrong words myself.

"As I got older and I watched my daughter grow, I had to go and look at myself in the mirror and say, 'Who are you? What are you going to do if your child comes home and says, 'Dad, I'm not a boy — I'm a trans girl.' What are you going to do?"

Wade is also father to 18-year-old son Zaire, 6-year-old son Xavier, and 1-year-old daughter Kaavia. Wade's ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches is Zaya's mother.
