Baby's fingers amputated after mom leaves her alone with pit bull puppy, hears screams, finds dog chewing on child's hand, officials say

A Florida mother has been charged with child neglect in connection with a dog attack on her baby daughter, the Miami Herald reported.

What are the details?

Chloe Wisniewski, 21, was arrested Friday after a four-month investigation, the paper said, citing court records.

Wisniewski on Feb. 14 told Charlotte County sheriff's deputies she placed her baby — whose age was not released — in a bassinet so she could take a “quick shower," the paper said, citing the arrest affidavit.

While in the bathroom of her Port Charlotte home, Wisniewski heard “screaming" and exited the bathroom to find a 3-month-old pit bull mix acquired the night before “chewing” on the infant’s hand, the Herald said.

According to WINK-TV, family members told deputies the dog was being kept for someone else. WBBH-TV said Wisniewski told investigators she brought the dog into the home the previous day after seeing a post on Facebook.

Wisniewski said she immediately pulled the dog off her baby, wrapped the wounds in a cloth, and called 911, the paper said.

The baby was taken to Shorepoint Health of Port Charlotte and then flown to Tampa General Hospital, WINK said.

In Tampa, the baby underwent surgery for her injuries — and three fingers on her left hand were amputated, and two fingers on her right hand were partially amputated, the Herald said, citing the complaint.

What happened next?

The case was forwarded to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit, which conducted an investigation, the Herald said.

Authorities found probable cause that Wisniewski “did, by culpable negligence, fail to provide the baby with the care and supervision and services necessary to maintain physical health,” causing “permanent disfigurement” to the child, the paper added.

Wisniewski's daughter has been recovering with family members, the Herald said, adding that Wisniewski on Monday posted $7,500 bond and was granted supervised visitation.

The paper said Charlotte County Animal Control took custody of the dog, and WBBH said the animal was quarantined and then transferred to the Animal Welfare League.

Anything else?

The Herald reported that the Department of Children and Families conducted an assessment of Wisniewski, and authorities said a urine analysis came up positive for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

According to WINK, Wisniewski said the THC could have been from a cookie she ate at a neighbor’s house that she said “tasted weird.”

Wisniewski’s next court appearance is July 17, WINK added.
