Canadian female hockey coach charged with sexually abusing teen player

A female hockey coach in Winnipeg is now facing several criminal charges after the alleged exploitation and abuse of a player she previously coached.

Madison Biluk, 28, has been charged with 15 offenses, which includes sexual interference, sexual assault, assault with a weapon, sexual exploitation, luring a person under the age of 16, and possession of child pornography, according to Yahoo Sports.

The alleged abuse started when Biluk was coaching the victim as a teenager. The abuse apparently spanned from 2019 to 2021, and it even stretched beyond Biluk coaching the victim. The abuse appears to have occurred over the COVID-19 pandemic, when many ice rinks across Canada and the U.S. were closed.

Constable Dani McKinnon, the public information officer with the Winnipeg police, said that the situation "wasn't just limited to a rink scenario," adding that "[t]his was a relationship that extended after hours over the course of this time with solitary meetings between the two people."

The authorities were informed of the situation when someone within the local hockey community said that there was a coach who had a "sexually exploitative" relationship with a former player.

The CBC specifically laid out all the charges Biluk is facing, which even included assault with a weapon. Both Hockey Canada and Hockey Manitoba — the two organizations Biluk coached under — released a joint statement, addressing the situation.

"We take allegations of this nature extremely seriously and the individual is ineligible to participate in Hockey Canada-sanctioned programs, including as a coach, guest coach or volunteer while the complaint process is ongoing," the statement said.

Kyle Willis, the director of Interlake Minor Hockey, said that he first learned of the situation from a social media post that contained allegations of abuse. As a result, the authorities were contacted.

"We took it super serious. It's a child and a coach," Willis said. "The reaction was kind of shocking, but there wasn't really time for anyone to be shocked because we had to make sure that the survivor that put the post up was taken seriously and everything was going through the right channels, to the right people, and it did."

Willis was careful to note that if there are any more victims, he hopes they come forward.

"I really hope if there are, that they come forward soon so they can get the help they need to kind of navigate all this as well."

Biluk is unable to participate as a coach, guest coach, or volunteer until the investigation has concluded.
