Video captures the moment karate instructors thwart alleged armed carjacking in broad daylight

An alleged armed carjacking in Oakland, California, was thwarted when two karate instructors ran to the aid of the victim, and it was all caught on video.

The video of the incident from last month was obtained by KTVU-TV from a plant nursery business called Moss and Spade.

In the video,he victim is seen getting out of his car parked on Piedmont Avenue when two assailants drive up alongside and then push him onto the sidewalk. One of the two males in sweatshirts appears to have what looks like a gun as they take the keys from the victim's hand and turn to his car.

At that moment, two good Samaritans are seen running to the incident and beating the car that the assailants arrived in with sticks. The windshield shatters as the men jump into their car and speed away.

The alleged carjackers drive off without the victim's car.

KTVU reported that the two good Samaritans work as instructors at a karate studio across the street from the incident.

Carjacking incidents in the city of Oakland have skyrocketed to the rate of an astounding 40 cars stolen per day, a record number going back as far as 15 years. So far this year, there have been about 10,823 car thefts, a figure far beyond the 7,167 motor vehicle thefts reported last year.

One analysis from MarketWatch found that Oakland is the worst city for car theft in cities with a population of at least 100,000.

Apart from car thefts, the Oakland Police Department reported that violent crimes were also skyrocketing in the city. The violent crime rate, which includes homicide, aggravated assault, rape, and robbery, had increased by 21% from the year previous.
