Florida man arrested after police find him living in mother's home with her decomposing body

Florida police said they found a foul stench and flies that led to the discovery of a decomposing body that was allegedly being hidden by the person's son.

A friend to 55-year-old Layni Carver called police and asked for a wellness check after not hearing from her for several days.

When deputies from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office investigated the home at about 5 p.m. on Friday, they reported that no one answered their calls initially.

“After knocking multiple times with no response, deputies investigated the perimeter, and noticed a foul odor emitting from the residence,” police said.

Eventually a man walked out of the door and then immediately closed and locked it behind him.

The man, identified as 36-year-old Justin D. Carver, was evasive when asked about his mother, but eventually police were able to enter the property and find her body.

Investigators documented the gruesome details.

"DFC noted that the deceased subject was starting to bloat, with marbled skin, and apparent skin slippage," they wrote.

When asked when Carver had died, her son told police that he found her body on Wednesday. He also indicated that she had filed a no-contact order against him before she died.

The son was charged with failing to report a death to a medical examiner and also for resisting an officer without violence. He was booked into the Charlotte County Jail.

A neighbor told WPLG-TV that the son had been in trouble with police many times prior to the incident.

“That dude had problems from the get-go,” one neighbor said. “The cops picked him up all the time. It’s very sad."

He implied that there was a chance that the son had something to do with his mother's death.

"Layni had a lot of problems but all in all, she’s still a person, and if that boy did something to her," he said.

He also described the smell coming from the home.

“Death. Like something decomposing. It was horrible,” he added.
