Cher issues apology after major backlash following bizarre tweet alleging that she might have prevented George Floyd’s death

Accused of having 'white savior complex'

Entertainer Cher issued an apology after a tone-deaf tweet in which she suggested she might have been able to prevent George Floyd's death if she were at the scene.

What's a brief history?

In a since-deleted tweet, Cher wrote, "Was talking With Mom & She Said 'I Watched Trial Of Policeman Who Killed George Floyd,& Cried.' I Said 'Mom, I Know This Is Gonna Sound CRAZY, But.. I Kept Thinking .....Maybe If I'd Been There,...I Could've Helped.'"

She received heavy backlash for the sentiment, and many social media users accused her of having a "white savior complex."

One user wrote, "@cher I say this with respect: White savior complex. Stop."

Another added, "You've done a lot of good in this world. We as white women just need to be careful that we don't make ourselves the star of the story. I'm sure you didn't intend that, but it can come across that way. Who knows? Maybe w/the proper power of celebrity, he would've taken his knee off."

In a since-deleted tweet, another user wrote, "Um....Cher, I think you're great and all, but this ain't it. George Floyd's murder isn't about you. Don't make it about you. And don't inadvertently insult the traumatized witnesses who WERE there and did their damndest to save his life."

Following the criticism, she doubled down on her initial remarks and said, "Wrestled With This Twt, Because I Thought some ppl wouldn't understand, Or Believe an Entertainer Could have Honest emotions about a human Being, suffering & Dying, even if It's Only Shown On tv. You Don't Know What I've Done,Who I Am,Or What I Believe.I CAN,I HAVE,& I WILL..HELP"

What are the details?

Later on Saturday, Cher told her followers that she was sorry for the tweet and the hurt that it caused for some people.

"I Just got off phone With Friend Karen," she wrote. "Told her what Happened,& Realized,You Can Piss Ppl Off,& Hurt Them By Not Knowing Everything That's 'NOT Appropriate' To Say.I know Ppl Apologize When They're In a Jam,BUT [hand] TO GOD ,IM TRULY SORRY If I Upset AnyOne In Blk Community.I Know My [heart]."
