Female HS student who allegedly pepper-sprayed teacher for confiscating her phone receives 'appropriate disciplinary consequences'
May 09, 2023
The female high school student caught on video allegedly pepper-spraying a male teacher has received "appropriate disciplinary consequences," the Tennessee school district told WSMV-TV.
What are the details?
Metro Nashville Public Schools told the station the incident occurred Friday at Antioch High School, and the teacher received immediate medical assistance from the school nurse. Antioch is about 30 minutes southeast of Nashville.
WSMV added that an incident report was filed with the Metro Nashville Police Department through the school’s resource officer for further investigation.
The district added to the station that while officials can't publicly share specifics of the disciplinary consequences handed down to the student, the incident does represent a serious violation of the law as well as district policies.
What's the background?
According to the New York Post, the incident erupted after the teacher confiscated the student's phone.
The Post — citing Reddit user @Lazy_Mouse3803, who shared the now-viral clip — said the cellphone confiscation was a disciplinary action, as the student had been “texting and Googling answers for her school work."
The unblurred, unedited clip shows the teacher jogging out of a classroom, apparently after the student pepper-sprayed him. The student is seen walking after the teacher while another student is heard saying, “Nah, mace is crazy!”
In the edited, blurred video below, the teacher is seen telling someone, “She just pepper-sprayed me!” as the student unsuccessfully reaches for the phone while commanding the teacher, "Give me my phone!"
When he fails to comply, the student appears to pepper-spray the teacher in a hallway, after which he falls to his knees and hollers in pain.

Another adult can be seen in the hallway as the teacher stands up and says, “She pepper-sprayed me!”
Incredibly, the student calmly replies, “Okay, now give me my phone.”
