Female high school student pepper-sprays male teacher for confiscating her phone: Report

Video caught the moment when a female high school student pepper-sprayed her male teacher for confiscating her cellphone, the New York Post reported.

What are the details?

Cellphone video of the incident was recorded Friday at Antioch High School in Tennessee, the paper said. Antioch is about 30 minutes southeast of Nashville.

The Post — citing Reddit user @Lazy_Mouse3803, who shared the now-viral clip — said the cellphone confiscation was a disciplinary action as the student had been “texting and Googling answers for her school work."

The unblurred, unedited clip shows the teacher jogging out of a classroom, apparently after the student pepper-sprayed him. The student is seen walking after the teacher while another student is heard saying, “Nah, mace is crazy!”

In the edited, blurred video below, the teacher is seen telling someone, “She just pepper-sprayed me!” as the student unsuccessfully reaches for the phone while commanding the teacher, "Give me my phone!"

When he failed to comply, the student appeared to pepper-spray the teacher in a hallway, after which he fell to his knees and hollered in pain.

Another adult can be seen in the hallway as the teacher stands up and says, “She pepper-sprayed me!”

Incredibly, the student calmly replied, “Okay, now give me my phone.”

Now what?

The Post said Antioch High School did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The paper added that the individual who posted the video said this was the second time a student has attacked this teacher, noting that two months ago a student who was caught cheating on a test punched the teacher in the face for taking a phone from the student.

Reddit commenters were aghast and angry:

  • "The sad part is all the other kids just laugh likes it's a joke," one commenter remarked.
  • "At what point in time do teachers get to sue for school districts not providing safe working conditions for their workers?" another user asked.
  • "Seriously, modern teachers are expected to be security guards, babysitters, and educators simultaneously, all while getting the same pay," another commenter wrote. "That is CRIMINAL."
  • "Arrest the bitch," another user suggested. "What the f*** is everyone just standing around for?"
  • "She should be charged with assault and expelled," another commenter wrote.
  • "I was a public school teacher, and this is how I was treated, too," another user shared. "Gaslight by [the administrators], abused by students and parents. I was told it was my fault that my students threatened to kill me. I don’t think I’ll ever go back."
