Former University of Kentucky student indicted on assault charges after video of drunken N-word rant goes viral

A former student at the University of Kentucky has been indicted on several charges, including assault, after she allegedly verbally and physically attacked a black student and multiple police officers last fall.

Sophia Rosing, 22, was a UK senior, majoring in business and marketing, when on November 6, 2022, she allegedly had too much to drink and attempted to enter a campus dorm. She was prevented from entering a dorm elevator by Kylah Spring, a UK freshman, who worked as a dorm desk clerk.

Spring's interference apparently angered or frustrated Rosing, who then launched into a race-based tirade, calling Spring, who is black, a "n*****" hundreds of times. A witness recorded the interaction between the two women and then shared it on social media.

The video shows Spring lightly restraining Rosing, who seems to call Spring the N-word repeatedly, even singing the word for several minutes at one point, though the word has been bleeped on video. Rosing also allegedly attempts to punch another person and bite Spring and attack her with a shopping cart.

Later in the video, several white individuals try to intervene and de-escalate the situation. One female even places her hand over Rosing's mouth, though the two then exchange heated words and the female exits from view. It is unclear whether Rosing had a prior relationship with any of the other figures who appear on camera.

At the tail end of the video, a policeman arrests Rosing, who reportedly continues to sing the N-word as she is led out of the building. Allegations later arose that Rosing "kicked and bit" her arresting officers.

After the 10-minute video of Rosing and Spring went viral, UK President Eli Capilouto announced that Rosing had been unenrolled from the university and permanently barred from campus. "As a community working wholeheartedly to prevent racist violence, we also must be committed to holding people accountable for their actions," Capilouto said in a statement. The university has since pledged to increase its funding of DEI programs and "supporting small, minority-, woman- and veteran-owned businesses and vendors through our Supplier Diversity Program."

Rosing has been charged with six offenses: one count of felony assault of a police officer, three counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of disorderly conduct, and one count of public intoxication. She was formally indicted on all six counts by a grand jury on Wednesday. She pled not guilty at the initial hearing in November and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 17.
