Police: Woman let a homeless man inside her home so he could shower. Then, he slit her throat.

A homeless man in Salt Lake City, Utah, slit a woman's throat last week after she let him inside her residence to shower, police said over the weekend.

The random attack happened Sunday, Feb. 6, inside the Good Samaritan residence at 850 South West Temple Street, according to KUTV-TV.

Police responded to the home at approximately 5 p.m. after the woman's neighbors reportedly found her bleeding profusely from the neck.

The woman, whose name and age have not been publicly released, was transported to the hospital in critical condition and immediately underwent emergency surgery. Her status has since been updated to critical but stable.

As of Monday afternoon, no updates on her status were given.

In a news release, Salt Lake City police said that "during the investigation, the victim told SLCPD she let the suspect inside her residence so he could shower."

"The woman described the suspect as being homeless," the release added.

No surveillance video was available of the attack or surrounding events. But using crime lab and CompStat data, detectives assigned to the case reportedly identified the attacker as 30-year-old Eric Jones.

On Friday, Feb. 11., at around 1 a.m. police located Jones near 130 South 500 East and arrested him. Jones has been booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one count of aggravated assault.

Last week, as investigators were still working to gather evidence, Salt Lake City police detective Michelle Mechling told KSTU-TV it was unclear whether the victim knew the suspect.

"It goes along with — know who you’re letting into your house and don’t let people you aren't sure of into your house. But this relationship between the two is unclear, again," she added.

Police said in their Feb. 12 news release that "no additional information on this case is being released at this time. SLCPD detectives are continuing their investigation."
