Woman licked ice cream, put it back on grocery shelf as a joke — now she faces 20 years in jail

The video went viral with universal disgust and condemnation

A woman who thought it would be funny to video herself licking the ice cream in a tub at a Walmart store and replacing it on the freezer shelf isn't laughing at the prison time she's facing.

The viral video has been viewed millions of times on social media and inspired some copycat ice cream lickers.

Texas police on Wednesday said that they had identified her after detectives "obtained surveillance video placing a woman matching the suspect description in the Lufkin store on June 28 around 11 p.m."

They say they are awaiting positive identification before issuing a warrant for her arrest.

In an email to NBC News, the Lufkin police department indicated that she was facing a second-degree felony charge of tampering with a consumer product.

That charge could mean up to $10,000 in fines and 20 years in prison, if she's convicted.

"Our detectives are working to verify the identity of the female suspect before a warrant is issued for her arrest on a charge of second-degree felony tampering with a consumer product," said a police spokesperson.

Police are also trying to identify the male who shot the video and can be heard encouraging the women to lick the ice cream.

Blue Bell Creameries called the incident a "malicious act of food tampering."

The company said all similar tubs of ice cream were removed from the store shelves as a precaution.
