Intruder breaks into home, wakes up and attacks homeowner. But victim has a gun — and ends assault in lethal fashion.

An intruder broke into an Indiana home earlier this week and woke up and attacked the homeowner, police said. But the homeowner had a gun and put a stop to the assault — with deadly results.

What are the details?

Police said a homeowner in the 600 block of East Jackson Street in Kokomo called 911 around 8:44 p.m. Sunday to report he shot an unknown male who had broken into his home.

When police arrived at the residence, they said they found a male who was wounded by a gunshot in the front door area of the home. Police said they rendered aid to the wounded male until emergency medical personnel arrived.

The homeowner told police he was asleep in his home when the male intruder woke him up; the intruder was in his living room at that point, police said.

The homeowner tried to get the male to leave his home, but the male physically attacked the homeowner, police said.

With that, the homeowner shot at the male in order to end the physical attack, police said.

Police said the intruder — identified as 51-year-old Scott Elliot Jones of Kokomo — died from his wounds. Police added that the homeowner was treated for minor scrapes and bruises that he suffered amid the altercation.

The Howard County Coroner's Office is assisting with the investigation, and an autopsy is being scheduled, police said. After the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Howard County Prosecutor's Office for a review of all findings, police added.

The case is under investigation, and no formal charges have been filed against the unidentified homeowner as of Monday, the Kokomo Tribune reported.

Police said anyone with information about the incident can contact Detective Dustin Spicer at 765-456-7194 or dspicer@cityofkokomo.org. In addition, tipsters can inform police anonymously by downloading the Kokomo PD mobile app from the iOS or Google Play stores. Police added that individuals also can text tips by texting TIPKPD, adding a space and the tip, and then sending it to 847411.
