John Mayer delivers moving rendition of ‘How Great Thou Art’ in tribute to Christchurch mosque shooting victims
April 08, 2019
What a touching tribute
Musician John Mayer took the stage at a recent concert with a tribute to the victims of the Christchurch, New Zealand, mass shooting on March 23.
An accused mass killer opened fire on two separate mosques in the area, taking the lives of at least 50 people. The accused gunman carried out the heinous act during times of prayer. Dozens of other people were injured in connection with the horrific killing spree.
Authorities charged one person in connection to the attack. It was later discovered that the alleged attacker purportedly had connections to a European white nationalist group.
What are the details on Mayer's performance?
Mayer was performing in New Zealand just one week after the attack, taking the stage with New Zealand musician Bella Kalolo and her traditional Maori performing arts group.
During the performance, Mayer sang the song in English. Kalolo then sang the song — which is typically performed during funerals in New Zealand — in the traditional Maori language.
The artists also performed a traditional haka dance in honor of the victims.
"Thank you for coming out under such heavy circumstances," Mayer told the crowd. "It means a lot to me."
According to The New Zealand Herald, this was the first time Mayer performed in the country since 2014.
