Singer Madison Beer says she suffers from body dysmorphia over insulting comments from online critics

Madison Beer revealed that she suffers from body dysmorphia after being mocked and ridiculed by trolls online with insults aimed at her body.

The 24-year-old singer-songwriter made the comments in an interview with Today while publicizing her new memoir.

"I grew up pretty happy. I thought I had a nice body. But hearing endless comments about how I don't, it was really, really hurtful to me when I was so young," she said.

Beer has over 60 million followers on social media. She went on to explain that she started changing her eating habits after reading so many cruel comments online.

"I wasn't eating as much as I should be," she continued. "I'm getting to a place where I'm feeling more confident, but it does suck and it is really hurtful when people have no idea what you're going through behind closed doors," Beer added.

She decried society for accepting cruelty online.

“I think there’s this weird notion that in order to be a successful artist, you also have to deal [with] public scrutiny and bullying and harassment. I don’t think that you should have to tolerate abuse because that’s just something we’ve conditioned ourselves to thinking is normal. I don't think it's normal,” Beer said.

She went on to advise teenagers to stay off of social media as much as possible.

"I don't think that as a society we're ever going to advance to a better place if we're all so quick to yell and scream and cancel each other and pull each other down," she added.

She also said that she had become suicidal after someone leaked a private nude video of her when she was 15 years old. She lost her record contract and had to rebuild her career afterward.
