Officer’s forceful arrest of black woman goes viral after video emerges — now the cop is in big trouble

A police officer found himself in trouble after a video of his forceful arrest of a black woman went viral.

Authorities charged Miami-Dade Police Officer Alejandro Giraldo after he shoved Dyma Loving against a chain-link fence before grabbing her by the throat and shoving her to the ground during a March arrest.

Footage of the incident circulated on social media and sparked an internal investigation. The investigation found that Giraldo had no reason whatsoever to arrest Loving.

What are the details of the incident?

Giraldo was responding to a 911 call made on March 5 by Loving's friend, Adrianna Green, when the incident occurred.

Green phoned police to report that a neighbor was threatening the two women with a shotgun. The neighbor was also reportedly making racist statements against Green and Loving.

Four police officers arrived on the scene and interviewed the women about the incident, and later moved on to discuss the allegations with the neighbor in question. Giraldo, who'd just arrived on the scene with a sixth officer, approached the two women and told them "not to go anywhere," according to the warrant.

Giraldo reportedly went on to arrest Loving because she "would not obey commands," was "uncooperative," and was "screaming at [officers], causing a scene in a residential neighborhood."

During the arrest, Giraldo can be seen grabbing Loving and forcefully restraining her, and later pushing her to the ground.

Authorities arrested Giraldo on Thursday. He was charged with felony official misconduct for reportedly making false statements in official reports. Giraldo's statements on Loving's behavior could not be backed by evidence, according to the outlet. Each of the police officers said that Loving did not carry on in the way that Giraldo alleged she had, the outlet reported.

Giraldo was also charged with battery.

"Giraldo knowingly and intentionally caused harm to Ms. Loving," a report on the incident read.

In a statement, the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office said, "After taking the sworn statements ... and reviewing all the known video evidence, we believe that there is sufficient evidence to charge a violation of Florida's criminal statutes."

Miami-Dade County Police Director Juan Perez said, "An arrest of one of our own is disappointing, and overshadows the hard work of the dedicated men and women of law enforcement, who strive daily to serve and protect our community."

His statement added, "This particular case underscores our commitment to cooperate and work together with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office in our continued effort to hold ourselves accountable."

WPLG-TV reported that Giraldo has been released from jail.
