December 02, 2021
Cases of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant have been detected in several states around the U.S., including multiple cases in New York.
In addition to the Empire State, Omicron variant cases have also been reported in Hawaii, California, Minnesota, and Colorado.
"New York State has confirmed five cases of the omicron variant," Gov. Kathy Hochul tweeted. "Let me be clear: This is not cause for alarm. We knew this variant was coming and we have the tools to stop the spread. Get your vaccine. Get your booster. Wear your mask."

COVID-19 caused by the Omicron variant was detected in a person in California who had recently been to South Africa, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which said that the person "had mild symptoms that are improving."
A person from Minnesota who had recently traveled to a convention in New York City experienced "mild symptoms" but recovered, according to the CDC.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported a confirmed Omicron case in a person who had recently been to South Africa, but noted that the woman was having only "minor symptoms." She is fully vaccinated but had not gotten a booster shot.
"The COVID-19 positive individual is an O‘ahu resident with moderate symptoms who had previously been infected with COVID-19, but was never vaccinated," according to the Hawaii Department of Health. "This is a case of community spread. The individual has no history of travel."
