#KamalaHarrisDestroyed trending following Democratic debate

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.) is not getting the reaction she wanted following the second Democratic debate, with "#KamalaHarrisDestroyed" trending Thursday on Twitter.

What are the details?

Fellow White House hopeful Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii) landed some heavy blows against Harris at the debate Wednesday night, and became the most searched candidate on Google for the second time.

By Thursday, #KamalaHarrisDestroyed was trending on Twitter, and continued through the afternoon. By the time of this writing, the hashtag was still going strong with more than 84,000 tweets.

The Harris campaign took notice. The Hill reported that Harris's spokesman, Ian Sams, tweeted out an NBC News report alleging that Russian bots could possibly be trying to help Gabbard's campaign.

But several Twitter followers teased Sams that the Russians couldn't be blamed for Harris's record.

What prompted this?

During the debate, Rep. Gabbard attacked Harris's record as a prosecutor and as attorney general for the state of California, saying:

Now, Senator Harris says she's proud of her record as a prosecutor and she'll be a prosecutor president, but I'm deeply concerned about this record. There are too many examples to cite, but she put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations, and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana. She blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so. She kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of California, and she fought to keep cash bail system in place that impacts poor people in the worst kind of way.

Harris responded by claiming that as attorney general, she made California's criminal justice system a model for the rest of the nation. Gabbard fired back, telling Harris:

The bottom line is, Senator Harris, when you were in a position to make a difference and an impact in these people's lives you did not, and worse yet, in the case of those who were on death row — innocent people — you actually blocked evidence from being revealed that would have freed them until you were forced to do so. There is no excuse for that, and the people that suffered under your reign as a prosecutor, you owe them an apology.

To that, Harris insisted that she always been personally against the death penalty, before appearing to take a hit at Gabbard by saying, "I think you can judge people when they're under fire and it's not about some fancy opinion on a stage."

Speaking of being under fire, Gabbard served deployments in Iraq and Kuwait as a member of the Hawaii Army National Guard while Harris was serving as the district attorney of San Francisco.
