Fox News anchor Shepard Smith criticized President Donald Trump over his controversial tweets against four far-left freshman congresswomen who defied House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)
Smith opened the Monday edition of Fox News's "Shepard Smith Reporting" with criticism of the president.
"Our reporting begins this Monday with President Trump's latest misleading and xenophobic eruption of distraction and division, directed this time at a group of minority women in the United States Congress," Smith said.
The president's tweets began a firestorm of criticism and recrimination when he told four minority congresswomen to go back to their home countries, despite only one being an immigrant.
"Why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came," the president tweeted. "Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can't leave fast enough. I'm sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!"
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), the leader of the anti-Pelosi "squad" that squabbled with the leader over a border funding bill, also denounced the president for his tweets against her and her three comrades. The four addressed the media in a briefing Monday that accused the president of trying to distract from other controversial acts of his administration.
The president appeared to hint that his tweets were a planned strategy to force Democrats to make the far-left fringe members the face of their party.
"The Dems were trying to distance themselves from the four 'progressives,'" he tweeted, "but now they are forced to embrace them."
"That means they are endorsing Socialism, hate of Israel and the USA! Not good for the Democrats!" he concluded.
