Texas cops respond to call about home invasion in progress. But homeowner has a gun — and doesn't wait around to be rescued.

Police in Frisco, Texas, said a homeowner opened fire on and wounded a man who was trying to break into the homeowner's residence Sunday night.

What are the details?

Police said officers responded to a suspicious activity call from the 10400 block of Belfort Drive just after 8 p.m. Frisco is about 45 minutes north of Dallas.

Police said a resident told dispatch that an unknown subject broke into the backyard, pulled a ladder off the house, and used it to break a window.

But as officers approached the location, police said they reported hearing gunshots. After securing the scene, police said officers found 18-year-old Clinton Montgomery of North Richland Hills inside the home — with a gunshot wound.

Police said Montgomery was trying to enter the residence when the homeowner shot him.

Frisco Fire Department personnel took Montgomery to a local hospital for treatment where he remains in custody for burglary of a habitation — a second-degree felony that carries a maximum penalty of two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, police said.

Police said anyone with information that might be related to the incident can contact them at 972-292-6010, and tips can be submitted anonymously by texting FRISCOPD and sending the tip to 847411 (tip411) or by downloading the Frisco PD app.

How are folks reacting?

As you might expect, commenters on the police department's Facebook page entry regarding the incident are happy about the outcome. Here's a sampling:

  • "Good job homeowner," one commenter wrote.
  • "Good job homeowner," another commenter said. "I’m glad you were OK. Criminals need to learn. Protect yourselves out there."
  • "Great job homeowner, but next time do us all a favor and take the intruder OUT for good!!" another commenter implored.
  • "Good guy with a gun," another commenter observed.
  • "Don’t mess with Texans!" another commenter declared.
