‘Do you think the world is going to end?’ Climate protester who glued feet to the ground at US Open complains about psychiatric evaluation

A climate activist who was arrested after gluing his feet to the stands at the U.S. Open has argued that he was questioned as if he were in an "apocalyptic cult" in an attempt by authorities to "intimidate" and "paint a distorted picture" of him.

Shayok Mukhopadhyay was one of four climate activists who took part in an a disruption of the famous tennis tournament. Environmentalist group Extinction Rebellion claim ownership of the distraction.

During a women's match between American Coco Gauff and Czech Karolina Muchová, a group of three activists began shouting and put a halt to the second set of the match. It would later be discovered that Mukhopadhyay had glued his feet to the concrete, which meant it took almost 50 minutes for authorities to get him into custody.

Gregory Schwedock, 35, and Mukhopadhyay, 50, were charged with criminal trespass for their participation, according to the Daily Wire. Both are from New York.

Mukhopadhyay was taken to East Elmhurst Hospital and given a psychiatric evaluation, PJ Media reported.

“I’ve been arrested before, but I’ve never had this experience,” he said. “They were asking obvious leading questions like, ‘Do you think the world is going to end?’ This typical stereotype of the crazy, apocalyptic cult kind of thing.”

“This was completely a mechanism to intimidate and humiliate and to paint a distorted picture of me,” he added. “Who’s the crazy person here? It’s Biden who’s the crazy person here, who, in 2023, is approving new oil and gas projects when international energy agencies founded by Henry Kissinger – no tree hugger – have said there should be no new fossil fuel infrastructure.”

Mukhopadhyay also spoke about how he believes that India, where he grew up, will be damaged by climate change caused in "the global north." This despite India being consistently ranked as the third-highest emitter of CO2 in the world, climate activists' preferred measurement.

“India is something I constantly think about because I grew up there, and I’m keenly aware of how low the level of resource consumption and energy consumption is there,” the activist claimed. “The Gangetic Delta, the mangrove forest, the Sundarbans, where the Ganges river empties into the Bay of Bengal, these are extremely vulnerable areas to climate change," he continued.

"They’re going to pay the price for this huge amount of resource and energy consumption in the global north. That injustice really, really horrifies me.”

The World Resources Institute placed India behind China and the United States and ahead of the European Union, Russia, Japan, and Brazil in carbon emissions.

Mukhopadhyay was later allowed to leave the precinct with a ticket.

The protester's attorney, Ron Kuby, said that his client was just "following the science."

“When somebody who accepts the international scientific consensus that climate change is putting the planet in peril is deemed by the cops to be a delusional psychotic, it’s disturbing,” the lawyer said.
