Vicky White, on-the-run corrections officer, dead after being caught with missing inmate

Alabama corrections officer Vicky White is dead after what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, ABC News has confirmed.

The officer fled from a Florence, Alabama, jail with 38-year-old inmate Casey White on April 29 and remained on the run until Monday night, when they were apprehended in Indiana.

What are the details?

Authorities said that Vicky, 56, died on Monday evening after she and Casey were apprehended in Evansville, Indiana.

The two fled from police after they were reported to be holed up inside an area motel and ended up crashing their vehicle.

Vicky was initially hospitalized with "very serious" injuries believed to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Casey was unhurt in the accident.

"Can't clarify how long they have been in Evansville ... lucky we stumbled upon them today," Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said during a Monday press conference on the incident.

"We got a dangerous man off the street today," Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton added.

Casey — who was in jail and facing two counts of capital murder for reportedly stabbing a woman to death in 2015 — is set to be arraigned this week. According to CNN, Vicky was first charged with permitting or facilitating escape in the first degree. Before her death, she faced additional forgery and identity theft charges in connection with the escape and elusion.

Singleton vowed that Casey will not escape police custody again.

"He will be in a cell by himself," Singleton said. "He will stay in handcuffs and shackles while he's in that cell and if he wants to sue me for violating his civil rights, so be it. He's not getting out of this jail again. I'll assure you that."

Vicky was formerly the assistant director of corrections for Lauderdale County and was said to have known Casey since 2020. Prior to her disappearance, she filed paperwork to retire and sold her home far below market value.

"This escape was obviously well planned and calculated," Singleton added. "A lot of preparation went into this. They had plenty of resources, had cash, had vehicles, had everything they needed to pull this off, and that's what made this last week and a half so challenging. We were starting from ground zero, and not only that, we started — they got a six-hour head start on us."
