Video: HS student punches teacher in face apparently over confiscated cell phone. Another teacher says, 'Those are the things that we deal with in the classroom.'

A student at Lamar High School in Houston, Texas, was caught on video punching a teacher in the face Thursday, KHOU-TV reported.

The violence apparently was over a confiscated cell phone.

In a clip used by KHOU that blurs the faces of the student and teacher, the student is seen right up in the teacher's face and demanding his phone back.

A raw video of the altercation shows the student ordering the teacher, "Gimme my f***in' phone, [N-word]!" After repeated demands from the student, the teacher tells the student, "Go sit down." With that the student socks the teacher in the face with an audible thud, after which screams are heard.

What did the principal have to say?

KHOU said the school's principal sent a note to parents that reads, "We do not condone and will not tolerate this type of behavior. It is always our top priority to maintain an environment where our students and staff are safe. Administrators will be looking into the cause of the altercation and continue to evaluate ways to prevent these occurrences in the future."

Another teacher in the district speaks out

The station said it spoke to a Houston Independent School District teacher who didn't want to be identified — and while the teacher did speak on camera, the video did not show his face.

"Twenty years ago, you wouldn't hear the same types of things that you hear in the classroom today from students," the teacher told KHOU.

He added to the station that he's been teaching for about that length of time and that disrespect from students is getting worse, both verbally and physically.

"Those are the things that we deal with in the classroom. Those are some things that you have to ... prepare yourself for when you go to work in the morning. ... I might get punched in the face or somebody might throw a punch at me," the teacher told KHOU.

The station added that the teacher believes some students simply don't realize the potential consequences of their actions and that something has to change in schools so that everyone can be safe.
