An individual wins the National Spelling Bee for the first time in 4 years

For the first time in four years, the National Spelling Bee has not ended in a tie. Twelve year old Ananya Vinay of Fresno, California, won this year's spelling competition. On today's "Pure Opelka," Mike Opelka marveled at the extensive knowledge of this young lady.

When given the winning word, she didn't need context, origin, or definition. She knew "marocain" right off the bat. She was the youngest finalist in the contest's history.

If you also didn't know what "marocain" is, it's a type of acrepefabric.

She was given as a prize $40,000 in cash, a $2,500 savings bond and a "large collection of reference books," which Mike suspected she already has at home.

To see more from Mike, visit his channel on TheBlaze and listen live to “Pure Opelka” weekdays 7–10 p.m. ET & Saturdays 6–9 a.m. ET, only on TheBlaze Radio Network.
