Listen: To tip or not to tip – is it time for the restaurant industry to change this policy?

Doc and Kal recently debated the merits of tipping as the restaurant industry faces potential changes.

The Department of Labor has proposed a controversial change that would allow employers to control wait staff’s tips, theoretically so they could be pooled and divided among servers and cooks. Critics of the move say it gives restaurants too much control over workers’ earnings.

Kal shared some of his experience as a restaurant server and explained how pool-tipping works in some restaurants when tips are shared with busboys and other workers.

Doc pointed out that restaurants are already inflating the price of food so they make money that way and explained why he think tipping just gives employers a way to pay servers less.

“I think the whole tipping thing is bogus anyways,” Doc said.
