Professor says mathematics perpetuates 'whiteness' because it was created by Greeks and Europeans

Today, Pat made sense of the latest headlines coming out of universities and one, in particular, got him a bit heated.

According to a professor (of course) math is racist. The subject perpetuates whiteness, according to Rochelle Gutierrez, a math education professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana -Champaign.

She says a person’s ability to solve complex math problems in algebra and geometry propagates “white privilege” because the methods were developed by, get this – Europeans and Greeks. She published a short chapter about whiteness and mathematics in a book titled, “Building Support for Scholarly Practices in Mathematics Methods” where she stated, “on many levels, mathematics itself operates as Whiteness.”

Unbelievable. She also said, "so many are experiencing microaggressions from participating in math classrooms."

"We might as well turn off the country," said a dumbfounded Pat.

Let us know your thoughts. Does 'math' offend you?
