President Trump weighed in on the controversial comments from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Tuesday and demanded that she resign from Congress.
"Anti-Semitism has no place in the United States Congress," said Trump.
The president made the comments during a Cabinet meeting at the White House to the media.
"Congressman Omar is terrible what she said," he added. "And I think she should either resign from Congress or she should certainly resign from the House Foreign Affairs Committee."
"What she said is so deep-seated in her heart that her lame apology," he continued, "and that's what it was, it was lame, and she didn't mean a word of it."
"Was just not appropriate. I think she should resign from Congress, frankly," he concluded. "But at a minimum, she shouldn't be on committees, or certainly that committee."
Rep. Omar, who is Muslim, made several comments from her Twitter account implying that Jews had too much power over the foreign policy in the United States, and that they had bought politicians off in order to benefit Israel.
On Monday, Omar appeared to apologize for the comments, but then added a caveat, saying, "At the same time, I reaffirm the problematic role of lobbyists in our politics, whether it be AIPAC, the NRA or the fossil fuel industry. It's gone on too long and we must be willing to address it."
Later on she tweeted a story from a former Democratic staffer who defended her previous comments and said positively that a Jewish lobbying firm was buying off politicians.
Her comments have been lambasted from both sides of the aisle as anti-Semitic and peddling in bigoted tropes against Jews.
