Amazon claims its 'Alexa' digital assistant is protected by First Amendment
March 02, 2017
Amazon has filed a motion in an Arkansas state court to get First Amendment rights for its Echo device named Alexa. The company argues that what the owners say to the device and the answers Alexa provides are free expression.
This comes after police took an Echo as evidence in a murder case. Now authorities want Amazon to turn over recordings of conversations between the owner, who is a suspect in the case, and Alexa. Amazon says police must provide a strong case linking the suspect to Alexa in order to get the recordings.
