Glenn: Americans want government-run health care – and it’s our fault

What happened?

A disconcerting new survey found that nearly half of Americans support a single-payer health care system and just 35 percent oppose the idea. The POLITICO/Morning Consult poll found that 49 percent of voters support “a single-payer health care system, where all Americans would get their health insurance from one government plan.”

What should we learn from this?

Words and phrasing matter. When asked if they supported a “government-run health insurance agency” as opposed to “single-payer,” the percentage of people who said “yes” dropped slightly to 44 percent.

Glenn’s take:

People who have been trying to protect our country from a health care system that works like the Veterans Administration or Venezuela have failed. Americans have clearly not heard a winning message if they think socialized health care is the answer.

“Conservatives or libertarians, constitutionalists, have not done their job,” Glenn said. “We haven’t done the hard work of educating people and every time we do, we’re speaking a language that they’re just not hearing.”
