‘I have HIV. LOL’: California law won’t protect victims like those of Daryll Rowe

Who’s this?

Daryll Rowe, a 26-year-old hairdresser from Edinburgh, has been accused of not only purposely spreading HIV to his sexual partners but also mocking them in text messages. He has been charged in a British court with infecting four men and trying to infect six more.

His first victim allegedly received a text saying, “Maybe you have the fever. I came inside you and I have HIV LOL. Oops!”

Is this what California just bragged about decriminalizing?

Yes. Last week, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill into law lowering the crime of knowingly exposing a partner to HIV from a felony to a misdemeanor. People like Rowe who purposely try to infect a partner with HIV will no longer be charged with a felony, and the new law even applies when people donate blood without disclosing that they have HIV.

Glenn’s take:

“Who … doesn’t think this monster should be in jail?” Glenn asked. If Rowe were in California, he wouldn’t be behind bars – he would be free to meet more men on dating apps to infect them purposely with HIV.
