Mom shocked to find out 'Uncombable Hair Syndrome' is a real thing

A Georgia mom was shocked to find out that her 1-year-old son's distinctive unruly locks are actually caused by a rare genetic condition called "Uncombable Hair Syndrome."

Katelyn Samples told “Good Morning America” that her son, Locklan, has always been the center of attention with his downy white hair that sticks straight up from his head.

“We get a lot of comments about him looking like a dandelion and that's actually a very accurate description of appearance and how it feels," Katelyn said. "His hair is extremely soft, like a little baby chick. People will ask to touch it, which is fine with us, as long as people ask."

Katelyn said she had never heard of Uncombable Hair Syndrome until a fellow Instagram user asked if Locklan had been diagnosed with the syndrome. As it turns out, Locklan is one of only about 100 people in the world with the hereditary disorder that only affects the hair.

According to pediatric dermatologist Dr. Carol Cheng, Uncombable Hair Syndrome typically diminishes during puberty, so Katelyn is spreading the joy on Instagram while it lasts.

“Our biggest message is to celebrate what makes you stand out and what makes you different," Katelyn said.
