Today on the show, Glenn made good use of the chalkboard to explain what’s going on with the Democratic National Committee, the one-time working-man’s party that has now fallen out of favor with middle-class Americans.
In addition to serious financial problems (a.k.a. bankruptcy thanks to the Obama administration,) there is a civil war brewing within the Democratic party.
“The party of FDR and Bill Clinton has all but disappeared,” said Glenn. “You know that FDR won and he won by winning over the middle class, by making everything about the economy and the working man. Blue-collar America became their [the DNC’s] prime demographic.”
But that all changed in 2008 during the Obama era. “What used to be the party of the working man and the economy, was now the party of ‘identity,’” explained Glenn. But this new identity party has been gradually losing ground ever since. So, what is the DNC doing now to try to win back constituents?
“While the establishment is still milking ‘identity politics’ … a growing number of Democrats are starting to switch gears. What they’re doing is they’re throwing in with the ‘new set’ of Democrats. They're not promising jobs like FDR and Bill Clinton did. They're focusing on the economy in their own way. They're promising free stuff, free healthcare, free college, high taxes on the rich, expanded social programs, in a nutshell: Socialism.”
