Watch: Here’s why Russia is banned from the Winter Olympics

What happened?

Russia has been completely banned from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea after the country’s state-sponsored program for systematically doping its athletes was discovered. Olympic officials are still working to sort through which athletes were using steroids so they know which medals to take back.

Uh-oh. This seems bad.

It’s serious business. The International Olympic Committee is cracking down on Russia after a thorough investigation of the doping scheme. The Russian flag won’t be seen at the opening ceremonies, and Russian officials are banned from attending the games.

Will Russian athletes compete at all?

Technically, they can – as long as they compete under a neutral flag and any medals they win aren’t counted toward Russia’s official medal count. The record books will document zero medals for Russia at this Olympics.
