Since it's inception in 1971, Amtrak has been losing money... a lot of money. Why should you care? As Sara Gonzales explains in this video, Amtrak is and always has been largely subsidized by the US government and that means your tax dollars.
For the past 46 years, Amtrak's operating deficit has continued to grow despite the fact that the subsidies have also gone up year after year. Amtrak currently receives about $1.4 billion in government subsidies per year but is projected to lose $227 million this year alone.
"The country doesn't need more money pumped into a corrupt, inefficient Amtrak system. What it needs is to stop throwing money into another huge government bureaucracy," said Sara.
