The New York Times published Wednesday another bombshell damaging to the Trump administration, and once again it depends on anonymous sources. According to the report, Trump transition officials knew that Gen. Michael Flynn was under investigation for his Russian ties when he was named national security adviser.

According to two sources, the transition team was told by Flynn himself that he was under investigation for receiving payments from the government of Turkey for lobbying. They were warned about this weeks before the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

Despite this warning, which came about a month after the Justice Department notified Mr. Flynn of the inquiry, Mr. Trump made Mr. Flynn his national security adviser. The job gave Mr. Flynn access to the president and nearly every secret held by American intelligence agencies.

This comes on the heels of the bombshell report completely denied by the White House that there was a memo written by former FBI Director James Comey detailing a meeting where Trump asked him to stop investigating Flynn.

Some have said that if the report were true, it would constitute obstruction of justice and possibly provide grounds for impeachment, but the president has strongly denied the allegation. That report might have helped tip the scales in favor of naming a special counsel for the investigation into alleged Russian collusion with the Trump campaign, which also came Wednesday.

The White House declined to comment on this latest report from The New York Times.

Twitter did not decline to comment.

Flynn resigned as national security adviser to Trump when it was discovered that he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about a meeting he had with a Russian ambassador. He has since been at the center of the furor from allegations that the Trump campaign had inappropriate ties and interactions with the Russian government before the election.
