Ex-porn star Vanessa Belmond left behind a years-long career in adult entertainment, and is hoping to help others do the same.

The 25-year-old, who performed under the name Alexa Cruz, has become an anti-pornography advocate to spread awareness of the dangers perpetuated by the adult film business. Belmond is so devoted to the cause that she volunteers with AntiPornography.org, a group that fights the porn industry.

In a profile published on the organization’s website, the former adult actress said that she started working in the industry when she was 18. She decided to quit in March after she realized the emotional and physical toll the job was taking on her.

“I am now volunteering for AntiPornography.org and supporting their vitally important mission by speaking out against the devastating harms of pornography, prostitution, stripping, and related forms of sexual exploitation and abuse,” she said.

Belmond recently shared her story on the British television show titled “Date My Porn Star,” a program hosted by three porn fans examining the industry. In it, Belmond explained the lasting impact her former career will have on her life.

“Nobody really wants to date a porn star, stripper or escort. Also the whole family thing and having kids, I’m like ‘who’s gonna have kids with an ex-porn star,'” Belmond said, according to the Christian Post. “And even when I’m 60 I’m still gonna have this porn on the Internet. It’s like having a virus or something that never goes away.”

Watch her discuss it below (content warning: video contains graphic descriptions and language):

Belmond shared that she was infected with chlamydia numerous times. She said she once had gonorrhea and has had to repeatedly fight off bacterial infections.

Belmond also gave graphic details, many too explicit to describe here, about injuries from sex acts she performed on shoots. Some scenes left her with tearing and bleeding and required heavy pain medication to endure.

In a separate interview with AntiPornography.org, Belmond described her experience sharing her story with “Date My Porn Star.” Her passion for advocacy was evident, and the show’s hosts — Jonathan, Kevin and Danny — were visibly moved by the former adult star’s story.

Belmond’s story comes after another ex-porn star, Brittni Ruiz, denounced the industry earlier this year and announced she had become a Christian. She’s now speaking out as well about how her life has changed since leaving porn.

Like Belmond, Ruiz has said that the experience was damaging.
