New poll: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unpopular among New Yorkers

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., may be popular with the Democratic Party's far-left activist wing, but not as much in her home state, according to new poll numbers.

A poll released Monday by the Siena College Research Institute found that AOC's favorability was at 31 percent, while her unfavorability was 13 points higher, at 44 percent.

"She is viewed slightly favorably in New York City but strongly unfavorably upstate and in the downstate suburbs,” explained pollster Steven Greenberg in a press release.

One of the biggest things driving the 28-year-old congresswoman's unpopularity in her home state is her economic rhetoric. She seems to be taking a lot of the blame for Amazon canceling its plans to move East Coast operations to Queens.

“At least 63 percent of Democrats, Republicans and independents, upstaters and downstaters, men and women, young and old, black and white New Yorkers agree: Amazon pulling out of Queens was bad for New York," said  Greenberg. "Even 56 percent of self-described liberals think it was bad for New York."

Ocasio-Cortez was an outspoken critic of Amazon's move to Queens. Following Amazon's cancellation announcement, a billboard appeared in Times Square saying "Thanks For Nothing, AOC."

And while there was "certainly enough [blame] to go around" for the news, "voters say the biggest villain was Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez," Greenberg notes. "Only 12 percent call her hero, while 38 percent label her a villain.”

This survey was conducted March 10-14, 2019, by telephone calls to 700 registered voters in New York State. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.2.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story identified Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., as a Republican. CR regrets the error.
