Trump and Haley make good on warning, slash UN funding

Conservative Review

The authoritarian menaces at the United Nations will face consequences for their decision to challenge the sovereignty of the United States, by voting to condemn America for where it places its embassy in Israel.

On Christmas Eve, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced that starting in 2018, America would reduce its annual contribution to the U.N. by at least $285 million.

“In addition to these significant cost savings, we reduced the UN’s bloated management and support functions, bolstered support for key U.S. priorities throughout the world, and instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the UN system,” the statement said.

Ambassador Haley added:

“The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known. We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked.”

Haley’s announcement follows an anti-American vote at the United Nations that condemned the United States for the decision to locate its embassy in Israel in Jerusalem, Israel’s capital city.

Both President Trump and Ambassador Haley warned that the decision to challenge where the U.S. can locate its embassies would face financial and political consequences. They pointed out that the U.S. contributes more to the U.N. than any other country, which is more than 175 member states combined.

"They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us,” President Trump told reporters. “Well, we're watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We'll save a lot. We don't care.”

In the final tally, 128 nations voted for the resolution targeting the U.S. and Israel, with 35 abstaining and nine countries (the United States, Israel, Guatemala, Honduras, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and Togo) voting against it. Another 21 countries decided not to participate in the vote.

The Trump administration did show appreciation for the countries that chose not to support the resolution condemning the embassy decision. Shortly after the vote, Ambassador Haley invited those 65 countries to a reception.

In their campaign to delegitimize Israel, member states at the U.N. pass endless resolutions targeting the Jewish state, while ignoring real-world atrocities that the U.N. was founded to help prevent. Starvation in Venezuela goes unnoticed. Genocide in Syria and Yemen is ignored. The Iranian regime’s gross violation of international law doesn’t raise an eyebrow. Yet half of U.N. Human Rights Council resolutions target Israel, and more than 85 percent of U.N. General Assembly resolutions go after Israel too.

As the largest donor to the U.N., the U.S. under the Trump administration has come to recognize that the U.N. has transformed into an institution that works to prop up despotic regimes, while aiming to damage free countries’ standing in the world.
