Calif. Mayor Resigns After Purse-Snatching, Assault Arrest

SAN GABRIEL, Calif. – A suburban Southern California mayor has resigned days after his arrest for a purse-snatching and wild ride through streets with a woman clinging to his sport utility vehicle.

San Gabriel Mayor Albert Y.M. Huang says in an e-mail Tuesday to The Associated Press that he's confident his reputation will be restored but decided to resign because of overwhelming media attention.

Investigators say the 35-year-old mayor and a woman were squabbling outside a restaurant on Friday when Huang fled in his SUV with her purse and the woman clinging to the side of the vehicle. Speeds reached 45 mph over more than a quarter-mile before the SUV stopped.

Huang was arrested and booked for investigation of felony assault, felony robbery and misdemeanor battery.
