What is wrong with people?!

It's a loaded question, I know. But it's the only thing I can think of when I see cases like that of Allen Haywood, a man who was recently randomly and viciously attacked by two punk kids as he stood waiting for his train in the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station in Washington, D.C.

On Sunday night, Haywood was on his way home from the gym and waiting for his Yellow Line train when the assault happened. As he stood there, minding his own business with his nose buried in a book, Haywood says "all of a sudden someone whacked me on the back of the head really hard."

The hit came from a boy who Haywood describes to only be about 11 or 12 years old. When he asked the kid what he was doing, someone else hit him from the other side -- this time, a girl. The young girl continued hitting Haywood for more than a minute as she chased him around the platform and the other kids egged her on. As Haywood screamed for bystanders to intervene, no one stepped forward to help, but many decided to pull out their cell phones to tape the beating.

“Stop it! Stop it! G--d--- it! You stop this s--- right now! I did nothing to you!” Haywood can be heard exclaiming in the video.

It's bad enough no one stepped forward to help Haywood, even after the group of kids pitched his personal belongings over the rail onto the train tracks below. What's worse, however, is that after Haywood managed to break free and alert Metro security to call 911, bystanders were unwilling to help the police and told them they'd only hand over their cell phone-videotaped evidence if Haywood PAID THEM for it.

Unbelievable.
