Workers of the World Unite': Wisconsin Civil War Monument Defaced in Protest

"I don't think that's a communist slogan... What's wrong with the sentiment?"

Much of the dust has settled since the peak of labor protests against Gov. Scott Walker's budget proposal in Madison, Wisc. But while most of the protesters have dispersed, the clean-up continues.

In the latest video out of the embattled state capitol, a man struggles to remove graffiti from a memorial statue honoring Hans Christian Heg, a Norwegian-American Civil War soldier who encouraged Wisconsin's young "Norsemen" to fight and protect "the government of our adopted country." Leading the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment, Heg declared: "It is our duty as brave and intelligent citizens to extend our hands in defense of the cause of our Country and of our homes." Heg was wounded and died during the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863.

Wisconsin blogger and law professor Ann Althouse was at the capitol building earlier this week to capture the images and the response of some lingering protesters -- one of whom curiously insisted, "That’s why we need better teachers.”
