Pictures Recovered After Camera Submerged in Ocean for 4 Years

...the ocean is a salty and unpredictable place

Peter Govaars was in for a big surprise when he and his daughter discovered a dilapidated camera on a California beach. To his surprise, he found an SD card attached to the unit. Curiosity caught the best of Govaars, so he decided to clean the card and see if any data could be found on it.

Surprisingly, he was able to find 104 photographs on the card dating back to June 2007. If his assumption that the camera was submerged under water for four years is true, then it is absolutely astonishing that the images were viewable. After all, the ocean is a salty and unpredictable place, and water -- especially that much of it -- is known for destroying technology.

Govaars is hoping to find the long-lost owner of the camera, so he can return deliver these memories to him or her. To assist in finding the individual, he has posted the images on Flickr. MercuryNews.com has more regarding why he is so intent on finding the owner and his or her family:

“It really is kind of a neat time capsule, given how it was lost and for how long,” he said.

Some of the images feature a young Latina with pigtails and an oval-shaped birthmark on her left cheek. Some show her using a baseball bat to whack the candy and other goodies out of a Snow White pinata, and in others, she's blowing out the candles on a birthday cake topped by Minnie Mouse, an elderly couple proudly watching on.

“These might be the last pictures ever taken of grandma and grandpa, here at the party,” Govaars commented.

We'll have to wait and see if the family can be located. Intriguing story, indeed.
