Cyprus: Protesters Storm Presidential Palace After Deadly Blast at Naval Base Kills 12

An angry mob stormed the Cypriot presidential palace in Nicosia during a protest over a fatal explosion at a naval base. The blast that reportedly killed 12 and destroyed a power plant, brought about the forced the resignations of Cyrpus' defense minister and top military chief. It is unclear whether President Dimitris Christofias was in the palace.

Protesters didn't get far however, as they were blocked at the inner gate by riot police who, after being attacked with rocks, fired tear gas into the crowd.

An investigation into the cause of the explosion comes on the heels of criticism over how the 100 containers - most of them filled with gunpowder - had been stored in the "scorching heat."
