Cain beats Perry at Western Conservative Summit

Rick Perry certainly has the look and street cred in Texas, but it was Herman Cain that won the Western Conservative Summit straw poll. Both Perry and Cain as well as Rick Santorum spoke at the three-day event hosted in Denver, Colo.

Of the 508 ballots cast, Cain came out on top with 48 percent of the vote. Perry came in a distant second with 13 percent followed by Santorum and Mitt Romney, who tied with 10 percent. Michele Bachmann secured 9 percent and Newt Gingrich got 1 percent.

The number don't necessarily mean much. Romney actually leads the field in the entire West (a much larger sample of voters than at a summit in Denver), according to the latest Gallup poll. Also, Perry has not formally announced any candidacy.
