Santorum Blasts Paul on 9/11 Comments: Stop ‘Parroting Osama bin Laden’

"You said that it was our actions that brought about the actions of 9/11.”

Texas Congressman Ron Paul drew jeers during CNN's Tea Party debate Monday evening when the conversation turned to his views on America's foreign policy -- which he believes helped provoke the September 11 attacks.

Paul was promptly chastised by former Sen. Rick Santorum, who blasted, “On your website, on 9/11, you had a blog post that basically blamed the United States for 9/11– on your website yesterday."

"You said that it was our actions that brought about the actions of 9/11.”

"Congressman Paul, that is irresponsible."

Santorum also told Paul that he “should not be parroting what Osama bin Laden said on 9/11.”

Paul defended his views, however, saying, "I agree we are still in danger but most of the danger comes from our lack of wisdom in foreign policy."

The Libertarian explained that America could cut defense spending by removing the hundreds of U.S. military bases stationed around the world.

"This whole 'Muslim world is attacking us because we are free and prosperous' [theory], it is just not true," Paul said, drawing boos from the audience.

"We’re under a grave threat because we occupy so many countries."

But perhaps the biggest round of boos for the evening came when Paul said Osama bin Laden attacked the U.S. on September 11 because of U.S. military presence in Afghanistan and in part because bin Laden believed the U.S. treated the Palestinians "unfairly."
