Chris Matthews to Top McCain '08 Aide: 'We Were All Rooting for You'
September 29, 2011
"...a lot of us in this business like John McCain a lot."
Come again?
MSNBC's Chris Matthews seemed to have suffered a momentary lapse of amnesia when he forgot that, during the 2008 presidential election, now-President Barack Obama sent a "thrill" up his leg, asserting that he was in fact "rooting" for John McCain.
That was not a misprint. Speaking to top McCain campaign aide Steve Schmidt, who appeared on Thursday's episode of Hardball, Matthews stated, "I think you did a good job last time. I mean it. We were all rooting for you, by the way. And a lot of us in this business like John McCain a lot."
Matthews added, "He didn't think we did and we were tough on him last time. I liked Obama. But I tell you, I've always liked McCain. He's still mad at me. Fine. That's the way it is...He ought to be mad at me."
