Undergo a Miraculous Transformation': George Soros 'Pretty Sure' Romney Will Pursue a Stimulus if Elected

Billionaire investor George Soros said he expects the Republicans to undergo a "miraculous transformation" in favor of a stimulus program if they win the White House in November.

"If the Republicans win actually they'll undergo a miraculous transformation where they discover that actually it wouldn't be so bad if we can afford to have some stimulus," Soros told CNN's Fareed Zakaria in an interview that aired Sunday.

"So you think Mitt Romney, if elected, would pursue a stimulus program?" Zakaria asked.

"I think — I’m pretty sure that would happen," Soros said. "I mean, of course, Obama would like to as well. He may find it more difficult if the Republicans continue to obstruct him."

Seizing on that, Zakaria asked Soros whether he felt the GOP opposition to more stimulus is "just cynical -- they want the economy to stay weak in an election year?"

"Unfortunately, our political system is now not functioning the way it used to in the sense that the political parties are more determined to destroy each other than to lead to a -- policies that would benefit the country."
