Illegal Guns That Came From Out of State': Bloomberg Comments on the Shooting of 4 NYPD Officers

Bloomberg remarked, "All the shootings have a disgraceful fact in common- all were committed with illegal guns that came from out of state"

Four NYPD officers have been shot by a man who was holding his pregnant girlfriend and their 4-month-old hostage in his sixth floor apartment, but they are all expected to make a full recovery.

Two were hit in the leg and the others were grazed by the suspect's bullets.  The shooter, Nakwon Foxworth, 33, was shot in the stomach after firing on the officers twelve times, and is in stable but critical condition.

NY Daily News reports that the trouble began Saturday night, when movers were blocking the entrance to his building.  He supposedly took his child's stroller and began "ramming" at the obstruction--with the baby still inside.  He pulled a gun soon after people started screaming, "the baby! the baby!"

Foxworth has already served time for attempted murder and selling drugs.  At the time of the attack, he had several illegal guns and ample ammunition in his home.

Mayor Bloomberg, who visited the officers in the hospital, remarked:

'We have now had eight - that's correct, eight - members of the department shot in the last four months. And this is the second time in the last 24 hours police have been fired upon by armed assailants.

'All the shootings have a disgraceful fact in common: all were committed with illegal guns that came from out of state. And that is the case with nearly every shooting in our city.

'We got very lucky tonight, with no life-threatening injuries to officers or innocent bystanders. But sometimes, as you remember, we aren't so lucky, as we saw with the murder of Police Officer Peter Figoski in December.'

Foxworth's girlfriend was able to escape with her child in the middle of the shoot-out.
