HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Rescuers are returning to wetlands along California's southern coast Saturday in hopes that a dolphin that got stuck there has found its way to open waters.
Peter Wallerstein of Marine Animal Rescue says the dolphin doesn't need a high tide to escape the shallow waters of the Bolsa Chica wetlands where it was swimming tight circles in on Friday.
Wallerstein says the dolphin is very healthy, and rescuers hope it will find its way out on its own, rather than agitating the powerful animal, which could put rescuers in harm's way.
The dolphin wandered into a narrow channel along Friday, preventing it from reuniting with a pod of dolphins.
The wetlands is separated from the ocean by a wide beach and Pacific Coast Highway.
