It couldn't possibly get any more awkward than competing against your potentially bitter spouse for public office. That's what's happening in a New York assembly race between Michelle and Mark Schimel.
Married for 32 years, the Schimels have two children, but separated a year ago. They have yet to formally divorce.
Michelle is the Democratic incumbent. Mark's her Republican challenger.
“You’re joking,” Irma Schimel, Mark's mother, told the Daily News regarding this complete disaster in the making. “This is a really startling thing. It’s a shock. Why would he do this?”
