HBO is reportedly developing a film about Fox News Channel chief Roger Ailes, with MSNBC "Morning Joe" co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski as executive producers.

From Deadline Hollywood, which broke the news:

It’s based on the upcoming manuscript by media writer Gabriel Sherman who has written two cover stories for New York magazine on Ailes and Fox News, including his mammoth article “The Elephant In The Green Room” which came out a little more than a year ago and prompted complaints from the Fox News CEO. Last year, Sherman signed a book contract with Random House which at one point was tentatively titled “The Loudest Voice in the Room: An Inside Account of the Rise of Fox News” but isn’t formally titled now.

According to Deadline's Nikki Finke, Sherman's book is still in the research stage and set for a summer 2013 publishing date. Securing film rights for a book before it's even published is not uncommon for the premium cable network, which recently cast a critical eye at Sarah Palin in the film "Game Change" about the 2008 presidential election.

"HBO prefers to take on Fox News through Ailes. The idea is that it should make Fox News look like a Mafia, and you get into this through Ailes, sidestepping Murdoch, not approaching the story head on," a source told Finke in describing the film.

An HBO executive cautioned the film is still very much in the early planning stages.

“Nothing much to say. No book yet to read. No script. We’ll wait to see what the script looks like and then decide whether to develop further,” the executive said.
